A new phone era is coming for the local brand

Cherry Mobile is currently working on new phones that sport 5G connectivity and cheaper price tags, according to reports we’ve seen online.

The local brand’s VP and Head of Product and Development Lonson Alejandrino has told in an exclusive interview with Unbox.ph that they are currently looking to introduce new affordable phones that support the newest mobile connectivity, with the help of global chipmaker MediaTek.

The local smartphone brand is looking into unveiling phones using the MediaTek Dimensity 800 processor, a recently-announced 2GHz octa-core chip that supports 5G connectivity and carrier aggregation. “We just want to make sure it is the right time and right pricing to launch,” Alejandrino told Unbox.

The MediaTek partnership is no surprise since Cherry Mobile has been releasing more affordable smartphones packed with MediaTek chips in recent years. This is most evident with last year’s Flare S8 series as most of the devices in that portfolio are using MediaTek’s P series of chips. Will we see more powerful, yet cheaper, Cherry phones coming this holiday season? Only time can tell.
