Google’s AI models are now being used by PAGASA and Weathernews Inc. (WNI) to improve weather forecasting in the Philippines, particularly for storms and floods. The collaboration aims to help local forecasters issue clearer and more timely warnings during extreme weather events, especially during typhoon season.

Why it Matters: The Philippines is often hit by typhoons and heavy rains. Better forecasting tools can help local agencies prepare earlier, protect communities, and reduce the impact of disasters.
Google is providing its flood forecasting and cyclone prediction models to support the work of PAGASA and WNI. The partnership combines local expertise with advanced AI tools to give a more complete view of a storm’s potential impact. According to Google DeepMind’s Raia Hadsell, the company hopes that the collaboration will continue to contribute to forecasting efforts in the country.
Yossi Matias, Vice President and GM of Google Research, said that AI combined with strong partnerships with government agencies can improve disaster preparedness and climate resilience. Prep Palacios, Country Manager of Google Philippines, also shared that bringing these models to PAGASA and WNI equips forecasters with better tools to help keep communities safer.
As the Philippines continues to deal with stronger and more frequent storms, could this AI-powered approach lead to faster and more accurate warnings for everyone?
