Sony has developed a new way to recycle plastic from the back covers of old TVs and reuse it in new television products. This recycling method, called “Material-to-Material recycling,” keeps the same quality as regular plastic and is being used for the first time in the 65-inch model of the 2024 BRAVIA 8 4K OLED TV.

Why it matters: This recycling process helps reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions by turning used plastic into raw materials for new TVs. It also supports Sony’s long-term goal of achieving a circular economy in electronics manufacturing.
The project is made possible through SORPLAS, a flame-retardant plastic material developed by Sony. SORPLAS can contain up to 99% recycled content and produces lower carbon emissions during production than new plastic.
To make this happen, Sony added a new collection system for used TVs through Green Cycle Corporation. The plastic from old TV backs is sorted, blended, and reused to match the quality of new plastic. This makes it suitable for new product parts without compromising performance.
The BRAVIA team worked with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation to develop better sorting and material blending techniques. These technologies allow them to collect plastic from any TV brand and reuse it as material for new Sony TVs.

Sony plans to expand this approach in the future by creating a full “closed-loop recycling” system—where materials from old TVs are regularly reused in new ones.
To mark Earth Day, Sony is sharing more about its environmental programs on its website:
Do you think more electronics brands should invest in similar recycling solutions?
