Honkai: Star Rail Version 4.2 arrives with new characters, story, and anniversary rewards

HoYoverse has announced that Honkai: Star Rail Version 4.2, titled “So Laughed the Masses,” will launch on April 22. The update expands the Phantasmoon Games storyline, introduces new playable characters, and brings in a set of events tied to the game’s third anniversary.

Why it matters: This update combines a major story expansion with anniversary rewards, giving both new and returning players more content to explore while offering free in-game currency and limited characters.

The new version raises the stakes in the Phantasmoon Games, where the ultimate prize is now the chance to become the permanent Aeon of Elation. The story takes players to Planarcadia, where a public debate hosted by Fulwish puts the Trailblazer at the center of attention. The narrative introduces political tension, media influence, and hidden schemes that players must navigate.

Two new 5-star characters will debut in this update. Silver Wolf LV.999 is an Imaginary character following the Path of Elation. She introduces a mechanic called “Hidden MMR,” which allows her to enter a “Godmode Player” state and alter combat by spawning items and buffing allies. Evanescia, a Physical character also on the Path of Elation, focuses on building “Certified Banger” stacks to increase damage output while triggering additional attacks and energy regeneration.

The Trailblazer will also gain access to the Path of Elation. This version introduces a new weapon system that can shift between different forms, such as a lightblade and nunchucks, enabling multiple attack styles and team support mechanics.

Several rerun characters will be available through Warp events. In the first half, The Dahlia, Castorice, and Firefly will return. In the second half, Tribbie, Sunday, and Feixiao will also be featured. Meanwhile, Firefly, Huohuo, Seele, and Welt will receive balance updates.

To celebrate the game’s third anniversary on April 26, players can participate in limited-time events. The “Festive Gifts” login event will provide up to 20 pulls. Players can also receive 1,600 Stellar Jades through a special anniversary reward. Limited 5-star characters Huohuo and Robin will be added to the in-game store, where players can exchange them using a Golden Companion Spirit.

Additional content includes new activities, such as “Cosmic Data Roaming,” which focuses on combat-based streaming gameplay, and updates to existing modes, such as Currency Wars and Cosmicon Collective. Other events such as “Express Renovation Escapade” and “Relic Recon” will also be available during the anniversary period.

HoYoverse also confirmed global anniversary activities, including themed events in cities such as Tokyo, Seoul, and Los Angeles, as well as online campaigns where players can win prizes.

With a new story arc, added characters, and anniversary rewards, Version 4.2 aims to expand both gameplay and narrative depth. Will these updates be enough to bring players back into the Phantasmoon Games?
