Here’s ZTE’s plans for nubia Neo 5 series updates and Demi AI

During the launch of the nubia Neo 5 series at the SM Megamall Fashion Hall, we had the chance to discuss the company’s plans and roadmap directly with ZTE executives. The conversation touched on software updates, Demi AI developments, and the strategies behind the Neo 5 series for the Philippine market.

Among the executives present were Jason Zhang, product marketing for the Asia Pacific region; Gavin Lian, country manager of Nubia Philippines; Zhang Qi, deputy head of global strategy and branding at ZTE Mobile Devices; and Paula Palo, ZTE Philippines public relations manager.

Why it matters: In the Philippine smartphone market, users often face uncertainty around software updates, security patches, and long-term support. Nubia’s focus on extended updates and its evolving AI assistant signals a shift toward devices that remain reliable and useful over several years.

At the event, executives emphasized the company’s commitment to software updates. The Neo 5 series comes with Android 16 and will receive at least two major Android updates. Security patches will continue for up to five years, with critical fixes delivered promptly rather than waiting for scheduled quarterly updates. This approach ensures that users remain protected and can continue to enjoy the latest features without worrying about software obsolescence.

A major highlight of the Neo 5 series is Demi AI, Nubia’s proprietary digital assistant. Demi AI has evolved from the Neo 3, with added features focusing on gaming guidance, teaching, and companion-like support for users. According to ZTE, the roadmap for Demi AI includes expanding beyond gaming to introduce anti-fraud functionality and agentic AI capabilities, allowing it to perform more proactive tasks. By positioning Demi AI as both an entertainment and productivity companion, Nubia is aiming to differentiate its devices in a crowded market and offer users a more interactive experience.

Partnerships form another key part of Nubia’s strategy. The company has collaborated with gaming brands, such as the nubia Neo 5 series’ partnership with FPS game Delta Force, to optimize devices for high refresh rates and smoother gameplay. Last year, global collaborations with games like Free Fire informed this approach. Executives also highlighted ongoing efforts to explore additional IP partnerships, including anime or gaming franchises, which could bring further interactive and branded experiences to users.

On the retail front, ZTE is expanding its presence in Visayas and Mindanao, with kiosks and multi-brand stores in major cities. Sales trends from previous launches show strong adoption in provincial areas, especially for budget-friendly models like nubia Music Pro and the nubia V series (V80 Max and V80 Design, for example), priced below PHP 8,000. Localized launches and events, such as the Nubia Vibe Fest that kicked off last year, are planned to strengthen engagement with Filipino consumers across regions.

By combining extended software updates, a growing AI assistant, premium hardware features, and ecosystem collaborations, the Nubia Neo 5 series aims to deliver long-term value for users. Will these commitments reshape how Filipino consumers view mid-range smartphones in terms of longevity and smart functionality?
