HUAWEI brings back its Mate series after nearly three years with the launch of the Mate 80 Pro. The new model highlights the company’s focus on imaging, durability, performance, and system integration. It builds on the legacy of earlier Mate devices that introduced features such as AI processing, ultra-wide cameras, gesture controls, and satellite communication.

Why it Matters: The return of the Mate series signals HUAWEI’s continued push in the premium smartphone segment, especially in areas like camera technology and device durability, which remain key decision factors for users in the Philippines.
The Mate 80 Pro carries a familiar design language with a new Dual Space Ring layout at the back, forming an infinity-like pattern. It comes in Gold and Black color options and uses a vegan fiber material for improved grip and resistance to scratches and stains. The phone is also built with a reinforced structure and second-generation Kunlun Glass to improve drop protection. It is rated IP68 and IP69 for water and dust resistance, with claims of handling deep water exposure, high temperatures, and even freezing conditions.

For imaging, the device uses a 50MP Ultra Lighting main camera designed to improve light capture and color accuracy. It is paired with a 48MP telephoto macro lens that supports 4x optical zoom and close focusing at 5 cm. An AI Composition feature assists users by suggesting framing and adjustments based on scene analysis, using a dataset trained on professional photography.
Performance is supported by a new cooling system that aims to manage heat during heavy use such as gaming or multitasking. The phone is equipped with a 5750 mAh battery, with support for 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. HUAWEI claims up to 30 hours of video playback on a single charge.
On the software side, the Mate 80 Pro uses HUAWEI AppGallery and supports access to commonly used apps including productivity tools, social platforms, and local services such as transport and banking apps.
