Nothing Phone (4a) Hands-on: New Signature

The Nothing Phone (4a) feels familiar at first glance, but spending time with it shows how the brand is slowly refining its identity rather than reinventing it. It keeps the transparent design language that made earlier models stand out, while making subtle changes that make the device feel more cohesive and less experimental.

The back panel still exposes stylized internal elements, giving it that industrial look Nothing is known for. Compared to previous models, the layout feels cleaner and more balanced. The camera module sits more confidently within the design, while accents like screws, panels, and lines look more deliberate instead of decorative. The available color options also help push personality, especially with brighter finishes alongside the usual black and white.

The biggest visual shift comes from the new Glyph Bar. Instead of multiple scattered light strips, the Phone (4a) now uses a more simplified layout made up of mini-LED segments arranged in a straight bar. This makes the lighting system less distracting while keeping its core function intact. It still works for notifications, timers, and alerts, but now feels more focused on usability.

In use, the Glyph system continues to act as a secondary interface. It can flash for calls and messages, show progress for timers, and integrate with select apps for real-time updates. Customization is still present, allowing different light patterns per contact or notification type, but the experience now leans more toward function than visual novelty.

Up front, the display is straightforward. It is a large AMOLED panel with a high refresh rate, delivering a bright and punchy viewing experience. It remains easy to read outdoors and fits the phone’s overall direction of being practical with a touch of style.

The software experience follows the same approach. Nothing OS, based on Android, stays close to stock while adding a distinct visual identity through dot-matrix-inspired icons and widgets. It feels clean, with minimal bloat and smooth navigation in everyday use.

Camera hardware is competitive for its segment. The main sensor produces usable shots with good detail, while the telephoto lens adds flexibility for zoom and portraits. Early use suggests results are consistent enough for daily shooting, though processing is more restrained compared to some rivals.

Performance is not the main focus, but it is reliable. The Snapdragon 7-series chip paired with up to 12GB RAM keeps the phone responsive for typical tasks like social media, browsing, and light gaming.

Other features round out the experience. The battery is sized for all-day use and supports fast wired charging, while durability is improved with an IP rating. Stereo speakers, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and modern connectivity options complete the package.

In the Philippines, the Nothing Phone (4a) is priced at PHP 21,990 for the 8GB/128GB model, PHP 24,990 for the 8GB/256GB variant, and PHP 28,990 for the 12GB/256GB configuration. Pre-orders run from March 28 to April 6 through Digital Walker and open_source stores nationwide, with early buyers getting bundled freebies such as a one-year extended warranty, a phone stand, and a lanyard with a keychain.
