Globe, through its subsidiary Fiber Infrastructure and Network Services Inc. (FINSI) and in partnership with Google X: TAARA, has completed a successful field trial of long-range Free Space Optics (FSO) technology. The trial achieved 10Gbps wireless optical connectivity over an 11-kilometer aerial distance across Laguna Lake, with 80% of the link spanning open water.

Why it Matters: This pilot demonstrates the potential of FSO technology to provide high-speed, fiber-like connectivity without the need for physical cables or licensed spectrum. It could help expand digital access in areas where laying fiber is difficult or costly.
The trial used Google’s TAARA free space optics link to bridge the long-distance aerial gap and underwent rigorous testing, including the Enhanced RFC2544 test suite (Throughput, Latency, Jitter, Frame Loss) and a 24-hour Bit Error Rate Test (BERT). All performance metrics met Globe’s technical requirements.
“This milestone is a significant step toward delivering future-ready, cost-effective transport solutions that can be deployed quickly,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe. “The success of the field trial highlights our commitment to using advanced technology to expand connectivity even in challenging environments.”
Google’s TAARA system delivers multi-gigabit data using highly focused light beams. The Laguna Lake trial showed that the platform can provide reliable, high-speed wireless transport even where traditional fiber deployment would be difficult.
“This pilot opens doors to a scalable wireless backhaul solution that can be rapidly deployed, helping close connectivity gaps in islands and remote areas,” added Tan.
Xerxes Jonash Sta. Ana, General Manager of FINSI, said, “Our team supported the deployment and validation of the TAARA system in the field. We are committed to bringing innovative, future-ready technologies to the Philippines that overcome physical limitations and accelerate digital inclusion.”
The successful trial highlights how collaboration and innovation can deliver fiber-like connectivity without terrain or right-of-way constraints. It supports Globe’s mission to build intelligent infrastructure that connects more communities efficiently and sustainably.
With this achievement, Globe continues to strengthen its leadership in network innovation, helping communities across the Philippines gain more inclusive and resilient digital access.
