Smart launches first 5G SA network in Iloilo with concert

Smart Communications Inc. has launched its first 5G Standalone (SA) network in Iloilo City, marking what the company calls a major step in improving connectivity. The event was highlighted by a free concert at the K-Town Festive Walk Parade, which gathered over 5,200 people.

Why it Matters: Also known as True 5G, a standalone 5G network is powered by its own core system and is not dependent on older 4G infrastructure. This enables lower latency, faster speeds, and higher capacity, which could support new applications for gaming, streaming, and other digital services in the Philippines.

The company also rolled out major upgrades to expand 5G coverage and capacity across Iloilo City.

With the theme “Sakses Ka Na!,” Smart’s show featured performances from homegrown bands Kreonz and First Edition, Ilonggo DJ Young, and rap artist Flow G. Noontime show host Jackie Gonzaga and Ilonggo host Jordan Toledo led the program, which included games and prizes.

During the event, Smart highlighted the benefits of its 5G SA network, including faster downloads and uploads, smooth streaming, and lag-free gaming. Attendees like gamer John Gallo noted that the technology gives them an advantage in mobile games such as Mobile Legends. Another subscriber, Anne, said she looks forward to watching videos without buffering and sharing updates instantly.

To help more people upgrade, Smart also introduced offers for 5G SA-ready smartphones from brands like Honor, OPPO, Samsung, vivo, and ZTE.

Smart said the Iloilo rollout is the first of its kind in the country and is part of PLDT Group’s nationwide effort to improve digital infrastructure and expand access to information.

The company is encouraging both residents and visitors of Iloilo to connect to its 5G SA network to experience enhanced connectivity.
