Filipino Streamers, Pro Players try gaming without D, E, W keys in Mountain Dew challenge

Mountain Dew has launched a gaming campaign in the Philippines that challenges players to try their favorite PC games without using the D, E, and W keys.

The campaign, called “Play No Dew,” plays on a coincidence in PC gaming controls. Three of the most commonly used keys in many games spell “DEW,” the same word Filipino gamers use when referring to the drink.

Why It Matters: Gaming is widely popular in the Philippines. Data cited in the campaign states that 97 percent of internet users in the country play video games, making it one of the highest gaming participation rates globally. The campaign connects that gaming culture with a simple idea familiar to PC players. Removing the keys that control movement and actions shows how central those keys are during gameplay.

In the Philippines, 97% of internet users play video games, the highest rate in the world. And at the heart of that culture is the PC, where 6 keys matter the most: “D”, “E”, “W”, “A”, “S” and “F”. By chance, 3 of those letters are exactly what Filipino gamers call Mountain Dew – DEW. From movement controls to skill activations and in-game interactions, these three keys are critical in most popular PC games.

Mountain Dew, which has long championed gaming culture for years, set out to prove that it isn’t just liquid fuel that refreshes gamers but it’s literally part of the game. Together with BBDO Guerrero, they challenged the whole country to attempt the impossible: playing their favorite PC titles without the D, E, and W keys.

“Gaming is one of the fastest-growing passion spaces in the Philippines, and it demands brands that understand the culture,” said Nicole Villarojo, Marketing Director for PepsiCo Philippines Beverages. “For Mountain Dew, this campaign was about moving beyond visibility and into participation through authentic gaming insights and behavior. Play No Dew reflects our bigger ambition to move beyond being a supporter of gaming, become an indispensable part of the experience, and create moments that players genuinely want to be part of.”

To bring the idea to life, Mountain Dew provided an online to offline experience that began with a challenge.  Top PC game streamers were provided with custom keyboards where the D, E, and W keys were removed and were challenged to play with it live on their stream. What followed was pure fun and chaos. Creators like Alodia, Doc Z Gaming, Cherizawa, KingFB, AmaraTV, and Buunja, some of the country’s most skilled players, were suddenly helpless. The characters froze. Moves misfired. Enemies went unkilled. And their audiences loved every second of it. The challenge sent a clear message: you cannot win without “D”, “E”, and “W”, and gaming is not the same without Mountain Dew.

The livestreams generated over 44.3 million views across platforms within the first two weeks of launch, with engagement continuing as the campaign runs until the end of March.

The campaign also extended beyond the creators. During their livestreams, audiences were invited to try the challenge themselves by disabling the “D”, “E”, and “W” keys at home and recording their experience. Participants can post their entries on TikTok, Facebook Reels, or Instagram Reels using #PlayNoDew and tag their favorite participating creator. Selected winners received gaming headsets, gaming keyboards, exclusive Mountain Dew jackets, and more.

Finally, as the ultimate showdown of the challenge, last February 27 Mountain Dew held a competition between Pro Gamers without D-E-W keys VS amateur gamers and creators with D-E-W keys.

“Often, brands are trying to add something on to a game. But with this campaign we were able to make an impact by taking something away. Because, as all PC gamers know, you can’t win without the D, E, and W keys. Which is the strongest proof yet that when there’s no Dew, it’s no contest,” said David Guerrero, Creative Chairman of BBDO Guerrero.

The event reached full venue capacity, adding thousands to the gaming community who watched the  live competition where selected amateurs and gaming content creators formed Team Play The Dew and faced off against five members of Team NAOS, an internationally competing professional esports team and the #7 Best Valorant team in Asia-Pacific.

In a twist, the professional team attempted to play 5v5 with their D, E, and W keys removed, bringing the digital experiment into a live competitive setting. The result? Despite the valiant efforts and high skill level of the Team NAOS, Team Play The Dew won, proving that without DEW, winning becomes significantly harder – even for professional players.

Following strong engagement online and the event, Mountain Dew will also bring the activation offline through select gaming cafés nationwide. Players can experience the challenge for themselves at Kadiliman Café in Taft and España, TNC Café Cebu, and NCGC Matina in Davao.

From livestream challenges to nationwide café activations and a packed arena showdown, the Play No Dew campaign demonstrated Mountain Dew’s continued commitment to engaging the gaming community in bold and unexpected ways.
