Salmon Group, a technology-driven banking and lending platform in the Philippines, has secured an additional US$140 million in financing to expand its lending operations and roll out new financial products nationwide.

The funding will support the growth of Salmon’s profitable lending businesses, including Salmon Credit Line and in-store lending, as well as the planned expansion into motorcycle financing and loans for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Why it matters: The additional financing will help Salmon expand its lending services to more Filipinos, including people with limited credit histories. Its planned entry into motorcycle and MSME lending also points to an expansion beyond its existing consumer credit offerings.

The details: Salmon operates in the Philippines through Salmon Bank (Rural Bank), a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas-licensed bank, and Salmon Finance, an Securities and Exchange Commission-licensed financing company.

In less than four years of operations, the group says it has reached millions of Filipinos through its Salmon app. The company reports that the app has accumulated 9 million downloads, holds a 4.8 rating on the App Store and Google Play, and maintains 99.9% uptime with 24/7 customer support.

Salmon Finance also uses an AI-powered credit engine to assess applicants, including those with limited credit histories. According to the company, the system can deliver credit decisions within minutes.

Pavel Fedorov, co-founder of Salmon, said the company aims to reduce barriers to everyday financial services while maintaining the reliability and security customers expect. He added that the new financing would allow the group to expand banking and credit access, introduce additional products, and continue developing its Philippine operations.

The bigger picture: Salmon’s planned expansion comes as it looks to scale its existing lending products while entering additional segments of the Philippine market.

Motorcycle lending could serve customers seeking financing for vehicle purchases, while MSME lending would extend its offerings to small businesses. The company has not provided further details on the launch dates, eligibility requirements, or terms for these planned products.

The financing will also support the continued growth of Salmon Credit Line and in-store lending, which the company identified as priorities for scaling its operations.

Between the lines: Salmon’s model combines banking services, consumer lending, and digital credit assessment through separate regulated entities. Its use of an AI-powered credit engine is intended to help assess applicants who may have limited traditional credit records.

However, faster credit decisions do not necessarily mean every applicant will qualify for financing. Approval and borrowing terms will still depend on the company’s assessment and applicable product requirements.

For Filipinos: The planned expansion could give more consumers and small businesses additional options for accessing credit. Motorcycle financing may provide another route for eligible buyers to fund a vehicle, while MSME lending could offer financing options for business needs.

Borrowers should still compare interest rates, fees, repayment schedules, and other conditions before taking out a loan. Access to credit can help meet financial needs, but borrowing costs and repayment obligations remain important considerations.

What’s next: Salmon plans to use the additional US$140 million in financing to scale its existing lending businesses and roll out motorcycle and MSME lending nationwide. The company has not announced specific rollout dates or detailed terms for the new products.

The Bottom Line: Salmon Group has secured an additional US$140 million to expand its Philippine banking and lending operations. The funding will support its existing consumer credit businesses and planned entry into motorcycle and MSME financing, extending the range of products it intends to offer Filipino consumers and businesses.
