Grab Launches ‘Grab for Family’ for Safer Teen Rides

Grab Philippines has introduced Grab for Family, a new feature that allows teenagers aged 13 to 17 to book rides independently while giving parents and guardians greater visibility and control throughout their journeys.

The feature is designed to give Filipino teens more independence while helping parents stay informed through real-time trip updates, live ride tracking, communication tools, and additional safety features.

Why it matters: Grab says sign-ups for Family Accounts in the Philippines have more than doubled over the past year, with family members taking around 70% more rides during their first month after joining. The new feature aims to make ride-hailing more convenient for families without requiring parents to book every ride themselves.

The details: Once a teen is linked to a Family Account, parents can receive updates throughout the trip and follow the ride through a live map.

Parents are notified when a driver is assigned, vehicle details become available, the passenger is picked up, the destination is reached, and the trip is completed. The system can also alert parents about unexpected stops or route deviations, while in-app prompts can check in with the passenger.

Grab for Family includes several tools designed to add safeguards from pickup to drop-off. Ride PIN requires the teen and driver to match a unique in-app code before the trip begins, helping verify that the passenger is entering the correct vehicle.

Through 3-Way Chat, parents can also join the conversation between the teen and driver to help coordinate pickup locations, landmarks, and other trip details.

The feature also includes AudioProtect, which enables encrypted audio recording on both the passenger’s and driver’s devices during a ride. The recordings remain encrypted and cannot be accessed by either party, with Grab’s safety team only reviewing them when a formal report is submitted.

These tools work alongside Grab’s Safety Center and Emergency Help functions, providing access to localized assistance and emergency support when needed.

Grab for Family can be activated within the existing Grab app. Parents can invite a teen using their mobile number or a unique invitation link. After the teen accepts, the parent approves the request and identifies the account as belonging to a teen, which activates the relevant safety features.

Once linked, parents can also manage shared payment methods and adjust available safety settings based on their household’s needs.

For Filipino families: Grab says the feature is designed to help parents stay connected to their teenagers’ journeys without having to repeatedly call or message them during a ride.

What’s next: Grab for Family is available through the existing Grab app, giving Filipino families a new way to manage teen rides with added visibility and safety controls.
