Samsung has introduced the new Samsung 990 SSD, a PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid-state drive aimed at gamers, content creators, and PC users looking for a storage upgrade. Available in 1TB and 2TB capacities, the new drive offers faster sequential performance, improved power efficiency, and support through Samsung’s Magician software.

Why it matters: The Samsung 990 SSD expands Samsung’s consumer storage lineup with a more balanced option for users who want high-end PCIe 4.0 performance without stepping up to the flagship Pro series. It also addresses growing storage demands as modern games, creative projects, and applications continue to increase in size.
The details: The Samsung 990 SSD supports the PCIe 4.0 interface and delivers sequential read speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s on the 2TB model and up to 7,150 MB/s on the 1TB model. Both capacities offer sequential write speeds of up to 6,450 MB/s.
For random performance, the 2TB version reaches up to 850,000 read IOPS and 1.2 million write IOPS. The 1TB model delivers up to 700,000 read IOPS and 1.1 million write IOPS. These speeds are designed to reduce loading times, speed up application launches, and improve responsiveness during gaming and demanding workloads.
Samsung also says the new SSD delivers up to 38% better power efficiency compared to the Samsung 990 PRO, allowing users to achieve high performance while consuming less power.
The drive is supported by Samsung Magician Software, which provides firmware updates, health monitoring, performance optimization, and data migration tools for users upgrading from an older storage drive.
The bigger picture: Storage requirements have continued to grow alongside larger game installations and higher-resolution creative assets. Samsung notes that the 2TB model can store approximately 30 AAA games based on an average installation size of 64GB, making it suitable for users with large game libraries or extensive media collections.
Beyond gaming, the SSD is positioned for video editing, photo processing, software development, and other workloads that benefit from high sequential and random performance.
For Filipinos: Samsung confirmed that the Samsung 990 SSD will be available in the Philippines soon following its global launch on July 15, 2026.
Local suggested retail prices are:
- 1TB: PHP 19,075
- 2TB: PHP 37,678
The SSD will be sold through Samsung Storage’s official stores on Shopee and Lazada, as well as authorized retailers including PC Express, Infoworx, Octagon, The Net, JW Summit, PC Hub, Thinking Tools, Dynamic PC, DataBlitz, and MemoXpress.
What’s next: Samsung is expected to roll out the Samsung 990 SSD across global markets beginning July 15, with Philippine availability to follow through its official online stores and retail partners.
The Bottom Line: The Samsung 990 SSD brings near-flagship PCIe 4.0 performance, improved energy efficiency, and capacities up to 2TB for users upgrading desktops or laptops. With read speeds reaching up to 7,250 MB/s and support from Samsung’s Magician software, it targets gamers, creators, and professionals who need fast and reliable NVMe storage.
