Apple has officially unveiled iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, marking the company’s biggest design change to the iPhone lineup yet. The device combines a 7.6-inch inner display with a compact 5.4-inch outer screen, A20 Pro performance, a dual-battery system, and a new camera experience built around its folding design.

Why it matters: iPhone Duo marks Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market. Rather than simply adapting iOS to a folding form factor, Apple has redesigned parts of the hardware and software experience around two displays, multitasking, photography, and portability.
The details: When closed, iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display that provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, giving users a larger canvas for gaming, content, and multitasking.
Both displays share the same aspect ratio to provide a consistent experience when moving between the outer and inner screens. They also support ProMotion, Always-On display, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The inner display features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections while making the crease less noticeable. A new FaceTime camera is hidden underneath the inner display when not in use.
Apple also plans to add Apple Pencil with USB-C support later this year, allowing users to take notes, sketch, and annotate documents on either display.
iPhone Duo uses Grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and a precision hinge made from more than 100 components. The hinge is designed to provide a smooth opening and closing motion while supporting the center of the display.

Ceramic Shield protects the rear, while Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer display with 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The device also carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance.

The inner folding display uses a multilayer construction with a scratch-resistant coating, nano-textured cover layer, high-strength glass, custom adhesives, and a titanium plate to reinforce the panel.
The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization, a fast aperture, and an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto. A 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera adds wider shots and macro photography, while a Center Stage front camera can automatically frame photos and videos regardless of the phone’s orientation.
The folding design also enables new camera features. Duo Preview uses the outer display as a live preview, while Smart Take uses on-device AI to automatically capture moments when subjects are ready.

iPhone Duo supports 4K 120fps Dolby Vision recording on the main camera. Users can also apply Cinematic effects after capture at up to 60fps. Other video features include 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse recording and improved Audio Mix algorithms for higher-quality voices and music isolation.
The foldable design also enables Dual Capture, allowing front and rear camera feeds to be shared simultaneously during FaceTime.
iOS 27 has been adapted specifically for iPhone Duo. Controls and navigation elements move to the sides to make better use of the vertical space on the large inner display.

When opened, the Home Screen can display two pages alongside Today View. The Dynamic Island is also redesigned to work vertically across the outer and inner displays.
The larger screen enables Split View, allowing two apps to run side by side for the first time on iPhone. Users can also open two windows of the same app, quickly switch between apps, and save app pairs for later. StandBy also works on either display, even when the device isn’t charging.
iPhone Duo also introduces a larger canvas for Apple’s next-generation AI features, including Siri AI. Siri AI can use personal context across apps, understand what’s displayed on screen, and take actions based on what users are viewing. Apple Intelligence also adds features such as Spatial Reframing, Extend, an upgraded Clean Up tool, and photorealistic imagery in Image Playground.
iPhone Duo is powered by the same A20 Pro chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro series. It uses a 2nm process and features a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple says the CPU is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, while the GPU is up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient. The Neural Engine provides twice the compute power for on-device AI workloads.
A custom vapor chamber is connected directly to the A20 Pro package to improve heat dissipation. Apple says iPhone Duo delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.
iPhone Duo uses a dual-battery architecture, with one high-energy battery on each side of the device. It can provide up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, up to 44 hours using the outer display, or up to 24 hours when both displays are used equally.
Fast charging can reach 50 percent in around 20 minutes, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes using MagSafe or Qi2.
iPhone Duo uses an eSIM-only design worldwide, freeing up internal space for battery capacity. It also supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread through Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip. The device also uses Apple’s C2 cellular modem system, which brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability.
