The REDMI Note 17 5G is built for the kind of days when your smartphone is expected to simply keep going. With a 7,700mAh battery, a large 120Hz AMOLED display, and durability features designed for everyday use, it puts reliability ahead of chasing headline-grabbing performance numbers.

It’s a practical approach that makes the Redmi Note 17 5G an interesting option for users who need a phone that can keep up with work, school, commutes, and everything else in between. Here’s our full review.

Design

The REDMI Note 17 5G gets a fairly significant design refresh, but it still feels unmistakably like a REDMI Note.

The flat frame and flat display give it a clean, modern look, while the rounded corners keep the large body comfortable enough to hold. The redesigned camera module is also less imposing than some of the camera arrangements we’ve seen on previous models.

Our Sky Teal unit has a nice finish that combines matte and glossy sections on the back. It catches the light without looking overly flashy, and the metallic accents around the camera module add a bit more character.

This is a big phone, though. Measuring 169.70 x 79.14 x 8.45mm and weighing 225g, the REDMI Note 17 5G is something you’ll notice in your hand and pocket.

That’s largely the price of having a 7,700mAh battery inside. If you’re used to smaller phones, the size will take some getting used to, and one-handed use isn’t particularly convenient.

On the other hand, REDMI has put considerable attention into durability. The phone uses Corning Gorilla Glass 7i on the front and has an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance.

Wet Touch Technology 2.0 is another practical touch. It keeps the screen responsive when your fingers or the display are wet or oily, which is the sort of feature you might not think about until you actually need it.

For a phone intended to be used throughout the day and in different environments, the added protection makes sense.

Display and Audio

The Note 17 5G’s 6.99-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display is easily one of its best features. The panel has a 2396 x 1080 resolution and supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate. It can reach 1,800 nits peak brightness, with 1,200 nits HBM brightness.

The first thing you’ll notice is simply how much screen you get. There’s plenty of room for reading documents, browsing websites, checking maps, scrolling through social media, and watching videos.

The 120Hz refresh rate also makes a difference in everyday use. Scrolling through feeds and moving around the interface feels noticeably smoother than it would on a standard 60Hz display.

Colors are vibrant, blacks are deep, and the AMOLED panel provides the contrast you’d expect. It also supports the DCI-P3 wide color gamut and has a 240Hz touch sampling rate.

For users who spend a lot of time on their phones, REDMI also includes TÜV Rheinland certifications for hardware-level low blue light and Circadian Friendly viewing.

The Redmi Note 17 5G keeps its audio setup fairly straightforward. It supports Hi-Res Audio and features REDMI’s 200% volume boost, which helps make the speaker sufficiently loud for calls, videos, and other everyday use.

However, the phone uses a single bottom-firing speaker, so there’s no stereo separation when watching videos or playing games. It gets the job done, but the audio experience doesn’t quite match the large 6.99-inch AMOLED display.

For casual listening, the built-in speaker is adequate. For music, movies, or longer viewing sessions, headphones or an external speaker remain the better option.

Camera

The Redmi Note 17 5G comes with a 50MP main camera and a 16MP front camera. On paper, it is a straightforward setup, and our samples show a camera that performs best when there is plenty of light.

In daylight, the main camera produces good overall detail with generally accurate colors. The building shots retain plenty of detail in windows, walls, and other fine elements, while the foliage photos show that the camera can capture textures and color differences well. The raindrops on the leaves are also rendered clearly, giving the photos a good sense of depth and texture.

Exposure is generally handled well, although scenes with a bright sky can push the camera’s dynamic range. In the building samples, the sky is noticeably brighter than the foreground, with some loss of detail in the brightest areas. This is more apparent in scenes with a large amount of sky, but it does not significantly affect the main subject.

The camera also does a good job with close-up subjects. The foliage sample has strong separation between the green leaves and the newer orange-red growth, while fine details remain visible across the frame. Colors are somewhat punchy, but not excessively so, making the results suitable for sharing straight from the phone.

Low-light performance is less convincing. The indoor restaurant samples retain the overall lighting and atmosphere of the scene, but details become softer and darker areas lose definition. The extremely dark sample shows the camera’s limitations more clearly, with significant loss of detail and visible softness. This is an area where keeping the phone steady becomes more important.

The 16MP front camera performs better in well-lit conditions. The outdoor selfies show good facial detail and generally natural skin tones, with the camera maintaining a pleasant exposure despite the bright background. In indoor lighting, the results become softer, but the image remains usable for casual selfies and video calls.

There is also no ultrawide or telephoto camera, so framing options are limited to the main camera and its digital zoom. That is fine for everyday snapshots, but users looking for more flexibility in travel or photography will find the setup fairly basic.

Simply put, the Redmi Note 17 5G’s camera is good enough for everyday photography, particularly in daylight. It captures detailed outdoor shots and pleasing colors, while the selfie camera is capable in favorable lighting. Low-light photography and the lack of additional cameras are its biggest limitations, keeping the camera experience practical rather than particularly versatile.

Performance

The REDMI Note 17 5G runs Xiaomi HyperOS 3. The software comes with the usual HyperOS customization options, along with Google Gemini and Circle to Search. REDMI’s AI Creativity Assistant also brings several image-editing tools into the Gallery experience.

There are pre-installed applications and Xiaomi services that not everyone will need, so some cleanup may be necessary after setting up the phone.

One of the more important software features is the phone’s six-year security update commitment. For a device positioned around reliability and longevity, that’s a welcome addition. It means the Note 17 5G isn’t just designed to last physically; it also has a longer software support window.

The REDMI Note 17 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4, a 4nm chipset with an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 2.3GHz. Our unit comes with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

For the basics, there’s little to complain about. Messaging, social media, web browsing, video streaming, navigation, and other everyday applications are handled without much trouble.

Those are entry-level performance numbers, and the experience matches them. The Note 17 5G isn’t particularly quick when you’re asking it to do more demanding things. Apps can take longer to load, and switching between several heavier applications can expose the limits of the chipset and 6GB of RAM.

For the people this phone is aimed at, though, the performance is generally sufficient. A student working on assignments, an office worker handling email and communication, or someone using the phone primarily for social media and navigation isn’t likely to need substantially more power.

It’s simply important to set expectations that this isn’t a performance-focused smartphone. The Note 17 5G can surely handle casual games without much fuss, but more demanding titles require lower graphics settings.

The 120Hz display is capable of smooth gameplay, but the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 isn’t powerful enough to consistently push demanding games at high frame rates.

This isn’t necessarily a problem for users who only play games occasionally. The large display and substantial battery actually make it a decent device for casual gaming during breaks or commutes. Those looking for a phone specifically for gaming, however, will want more processing and graphics power.

In terms of connectivity, the REDMI Note 17 5G has the connectivity features expected from a modern smartphone, including 5G, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, and NFC. It also uses a hybrid SIM slot, allowing users to choose between a second SIM and microSD expansion.

The latter is particularly useful for users who want to keep additional photos, videos, documents, or offline media without relying entirely on the 256GB internal storage. For security, there’s an in-screen fingerprint sensor alongside AI face unlock.

Battery

If there’s one specification that defines the REDMI Note 17 5G, it’s the 7,700mAh battery, and it delivers in our testing. The phone can easily last for a whole day with some left for the next, and up to 2 days if use is just as modest as a secondary device. It lasted 18 hours and 7 minutes in PCMark’s battery test, giving it plenty of endurance for a full day of regular use.

That extra capacity is particularly useful for people who rely heavily on their phones. Navigation, mobile data, social media, video streaming, messaging, and other activities can all add up over a day, and the Note 17 5G has considerably more battery to work with than most conventional smartphones.

The company also says the battery is designed to retain more than 80% of its original capacity after approximately 1,600 complete charge cycles under its testing conditions.

Charging is rated at 45W, while the phone can also provide up to 22.5W wired reverse charging. From 18% to 100%, our unit took 1 hour and 36 minutes at maximum charging speed. That’s not particularly fast, but the trade-off is straightforward: you don’t have to charge a 7,700mAh battery as often.

The reverse charging feature is also useful when you need to give a little power to another compatible device.

The Rundown

Best for: Students, office workers, civil servants, and gig workers who prioritize battery life, durability, a large display, and long-term reliability over raw performance or advanced photography. The 7,700mAh battery, 5G connectivity, 6.99-inch AMOLED display, IP65 rating, and six years of security updates make the Redmi Note 17 5G particularly suited to people who rely on their phone throughout long days.

Skip if: You want a phone primarily for gaming, mobile photography, or multimedia. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 is adequate for everyday use but not designed for demanding workloads, while the single 50MP rear camera and single speaker keep the experience fairly basic.
