Just launched the other day is the new Huawei MatePad, a 10.4-inch tablet with Harman Kardon sound, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of expandable internal storage. Huawei Philippines sent us a package the other day, and here’s your first look.

  • 2.27GHz octa-core Kirin 810
    Mali G52 GPU
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64GB storage, with microSD slot up to 512GB
  • 8MP rear camera
  • 8MP front camera
  • 4G LTE, Single SIM
  • Dual-band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS
  • NFC, USB Type-C
  • Huawei M Pencil Support
  • Sound by Harman Kardon

Here’s what we have: Separate boxes for the MatePad, the M-Pencil, and a package for the Folio cover (not in photo). You’re getting the M-Pencil and the Folio cover as part of the device’s pre-order freebies, to which we’ll explain later.

Unboxing the device box reveals the basics, including a USB Type-C cable, a Huawei charger, some documentation, and the tablet itself. We have the M-Pencil and a load of documentation as well, with the charger in separate packaging.

The tablet itself is a sight to behold, and it’s graciously big. The 10.4-inch display offers a lot of screen estate for multimedia and multitasking content. The bezels are respectable for a tablet this size, given it’s still a lot less than the others. The camera is surprisingly placed on the longer side, which may give the idea that the tablet is mainly landscape in orientation.

All the sides seem to have something to look at. At one corner, we have the volume buttons and the power/lock button. They’re not on the same side, but it seems to be a logical choice considering the size and ergonomics of the device.

Loudspeaker grilles are found at two opposing sides of the device, and one features the USB Type-C port. We’ll talk about the tablet’s sound more on our full review, but it has turned out to be great so far.

Flip the device to its back and you’ll see a nice back plate in a Midnight Gray color, which is close to a deep dark Blue. There’s the 8-megapixel rear camera protruding along with the LED Flash.

We’re having a great time with the Huawei MatePad so far. We’ve been using it to draw scribbles and quick sketches, take photos, browse online, and even play games. We’ll discuss more of that in the coming days as we prepare our full review.
