Apple has introduced AirPods 5 globally, bringing Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to its most affordable AirPods lineup. The new open-ear earbuds also feature improved sound quality, better durability, and new gesture controls.
Why it matters: AirPods 5 bring ANC to Apple’s more affordable open-ear design. Apple says the new model can remove up to 50 percent more external noise compared to AirPods 4 with ANC, while still offering a Transparency mode for staying aware of surrounding sounds.
The details: The AirPods 5 feature an all-new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ, designed to deliver richer and more detailed sound across a wider range of ear shapes.
Personalized Spatial Audio is also supported, providing a more immersive listening experience. The new ANC system combines the updated acoustic architecture with improved computational audio algorithms. Adaptive Audio can dynamically blend ANC and Transparency mode depending on the user’s surroundings.
Conversation Awareness can also automatically lower media volume when the user starts speaking, making it easier to talk with people nearby.
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case introduce a force sensor with volume swipe controls. Users can swipe up or down on the stem to quickly adjust volume, marking the first time the feature is available on Apple’s open-ear AirPods design. Users can also respond to Siri using head gestures.
Apple has improved the AirPods 5’s resistance to dust, sweat, and water, giving them better durability compared to previous models. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case provide up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled on a single charge. That’s one hour longer than AirPods 4 with ANC.
The charging case extends total ANC listening time to up to 22 hours. It supports Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible wireless chargers, and USB-C charging.
