Huawei Mate 80 Pro First Look: Golden Shimmer

Huawei is bringing the Mate series back in the Philippines with the launch of the Huawei Mate 80 Pro in the country. I got to briefly see a unit this past weekend and here’s what I think about it.

Huawei Mate 80 Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.75-inch LTPO OLED, 2832 × 1280 resolution, 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate, HDR support, high brightness with Kunlun Glass 2 protection
  • Processor: Kirin 9030 Pro
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 512GB
  • Rear Cameras: 50MP main (Ultra Lighting), 40MP ultra-wide, 48MP telephoto macro with 4x optical zoom
  • Selfie Camera: 13MP
  • Connectivity: 5G, Wi-Fi 6/6E/7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, GPS
  • Other Features: IP68/IP69 rating, Kunlun Glass 2, AI Composition, in-display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, satellite messaging support (region-dependent)
  • OS: EMUI 15 (global) / HarmonyOS 6 (China variant)
  • Battery and Fast Charge Tech: 5750 mAh, 100W wired HUAWEI SuperCharge, 80W wireless charging
  • Colors: Black, Gold, Green

From the moment you pick it up, the device leans into symmetry, polish, and a clear visual identity. It is not trying to hide its presence. Instead, it builds around a few strong design ideas and commits to them.

The rear panel immediately draws attention with its light gold or champagne finish. It has a frosted texture that softens reflections, paired with a subtle circular pattern underneath the glass that likely marks the wireless charging coil. That detail is not just functional, it helps anchor the design, especially when placed beneath the large camera module.

The frame is flat and highly reflective, giving the phone a sharp, industrial look. It feels modern, though it may attract fingerprints in daily use. The flat edges help with grip, and the overall profile stays slim enough to remain comfortable. Up front, the display is also flat, surrounded by even bezels that keep things visually balanced. The only break in that symmetry is the triple punch-hole cutout at the top center, which houses the front camera and depth sensors for more secure face unlock.

That cutout is not just hardware. It also acts as an interactive space, expanding to show system alerts and status information like connectivity or time, adding a dynamic layer to what would otherwise be a static area.

At the back, the camera system is the main focal point. Huawei’s XMAGE branding sits at the center of a large circular module, housing four sensors. One of them is a periscope telephoto lens, easily identified by its rectangular shape, hinting at long-range zoom capabilities. The module also includes a dual-tone flash and additional sensors, likely for autofocus and color tuning. It is a bold layout, and it clearly defines the phone’s rear identity.

The physical layout around the device stays clean and familiar. The bottom edge includes the SIM tray, microphone, USB-C port, and speaker grille. The right side holds the volume rocker and a textured power button that is easy to find by touch. The top edge shows antenna lines along with what appears to be an IR blaster or secondary microphone.

On the software side, the interface looks structured and practical. The home screen uses large folders to group apps into categories to promote app compatibility with popular local apps through Huawei AppGallery. There are localized touches like Philippine banking apps inside a finance folder, along with a weather widget set to Marikina. Small details like these suggest a focus on regional usability.

Beyond what you can immediately see, the Huawei Mate 80 Pro carries updated internals and features, but these stay in the background during a hands-on. The display, battery, charging, and chipset all point to a flagship-level setup, while the camera system adds hardware like a variable aperture and dedicated color sensor.

The device also introduces a newer version of Huawei’s operating system with deeper AI integration, along with support for satellite communication in select regions. Durability features like strengthened glass and high-level water resistance are also part of the package, though these are not things you fully appreciate without longer use.

At this stage, the Huawei Mate 80 Pro comes across as a device that knows exactly what it wants to highlight. The camera module leads, the design supports it, and the software ties everything together. The question now is whether that focus translates into real-world advantages once the full review period begins.

The HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro goes official on April 17 with a suggested retail price of PHP 69,999.  For a limited time, you can get the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro at a special promo price of PHP 64,999 with a free Huawei Watch GT5 and premium care service in tow.
