Samsung Galaxy S26 FE Hands-On: Slimmer, Better

The Samsung Galaxy S26 FE takes the familiar Galaxy S design and packages it into a phone that feels noticeably focused on being thin, light, and easy to handle. Here’s what we thought about it when we had an opportunity to preview the device for some time before the official global launch.

Design: The Galaxy S26 FE carries a clean and understated design that closely follows Samsung’s current Galaxy styling. The flat metal-looking frame runs around the device, with the buttons positioned on the right side.

You have three colorways for this new device, including Graphite and a vivid dark blue called Blueberry, but we’ll focus on the new Pistachio colorway first seen on the Galaxy Fold series. The combination gives the phone a more distinctive appearance than the usual black or gray finishes, while the flat sides help emphasize its thin profile.

The rear panel keeps things simple. Instead of using a large camera island, the three rear cameras are arranged vertically along the upper-left corner. Each camera has its own circular housing, with the flash positioned beside the camera arrangement.

The camera layout also keeps the back looking relatively clean. There is no oversized module extending across a large portion of the rear panel, and the individual camera rings fit naturally into the overall design.

At 161.6 x 76.9 x 7.4mm and 193 grams, the Galaxy S26 FE is also easy to carry. The slim body is particularly noticeable when holding the phone from the side, where the relatively thin frame gives it a lighter feel despite the large display.

The USB-C port, speaker, and other openings are placed along the bottom edge, while the SIM tray and volume and power controls sit along the sides. The overall construction follows Samsung’s familiar minimalist approach rather than adding unnecessary visual elements.

The Galaxy S26 FE also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, adding another layer of protection for everyday use.

Display: The front is dominated by a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The screen immediately benefits from the high refresh rate during everyday use. Scrolling through menus, social media feeds, and websites feels fluid, while animations have the smoothness expected from a modern Galaxy device.

The 120Hz refresh rate can operate at either 60Hz or 120Hz, allowing the phone to adjust its refresh behavior depending on the selected settings and usage. This also gives users the option of prioritizing smoother motion or potentially reducing power consumption.

The AMOLED panel also works well for entertainment. Watching video content gives the screen an opportunity to show off its strong contrast and deep blacks, particularly in darker scenes. The display’s 1,900-nit peak brightness rating should also help when using the phone outdoors, where visibility can become a problem on less capable panels.

During our hands-on time, the screen looked bright and clear, with Samsung’s familiar AMOLED presentation. The relatively slim bezels also help the 6.7-inch panel feel immersive without making the phone unnecessarily wide.

The centered punch-hole cutout houses the front camera and keeps the rest of the display unobstructed. Combined with the tall aspect ratio, the layout works well for everything from browsing and social media to video playback.

Camera: Samsung has equipped the Galaxy S26 FE with a triple rear camera setup consisting of a 50MP wide camera, 12MP ultra-wide camera, and 8MP telephoto camera.

The main 50MP camera features optical image stabilization, while the telephoto camera provides 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. The ultra-wide camera offers a 123-degree field of view, giving users more flexibility when shooting landscapes, buildings, and group photos.

The 12MP front camera has an 85-degree field of view, which should also make it easier to fit multiple people into selfies.

Samsung has also brought several camera-focused Galaxy features to the FE model. My FanCam can automatically track a selected person and keep them centered in video, while Super Steady with Horizontal Lock is designed for smoother and more level footage.

Nightography is also included for low-light photography, while Photo Assist provides AI-powered editing using natural-language prompts.

Performance: The Galaxy S26 FE is the first model in the Galaxy S26 lineup to launch with One UI 9, bringing Samsung’s latest software experience to the device.

Galaxy AI features are built into several parts of the experience. Now Brief provides personalized information through customizable briefing cards, while Now Nudge can surface suggestions based on information from supported apps and notifications.

Circle to Search with Google has also been expanded to let users search for multiple items within an image.

Under the hood, the Galaxy S26 FE is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 2500 processor based on a 3nm process. It comes with 8GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 128GB to 512GB. We did not experience any lags or stutters when we opened multiple apps and fiddled around with the device.

Samsung is also promising long-term software support. The Galaxy S26 FE is set to receive up to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, giving the phone a longer software lifespan and the future user peace of mind until Android 24 or the year 2033.

Battery: The phone also packs a 4,900mAh battery. Charging supports up to 45W wired charging, with Samsung claiming up to 69% charge in around 30 minutes when using a compatible 45W adapter. It also supports 15W wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare.

Initial Thoughts: What stayed with me was not a single specification, but how cohesive the phone feels. Samsung has taken a familiar Galaxy formula and trimmed away some of the bulk without stripping away the experience that makes an S-series device feel like an S-series device.

The thin frame, large AMOLED display, capable camera setup, and growing collection of Galaxy AI features make it feel less like a “Fan Edition” compromise and more like a Galaxy phone that happens to be easier on the hand and, potentially, the wallet. It is a quiet kind of refinement—and sometimes, that is exactly what makes a phone more interesting. We’d love to experience the device more if we are allowed to, so we can give you a better perspective.
