Why it matters: Southeast Asia has a growing population of young, digitally active consumers, making it an important market for Roblox’s gaming and creator ecosystem. Neoh’s appointment signals the company’s intention to strengthen its regional presence while helping local developers turn their ideas into experiences and businesses that can reach a global audience.

The details: In his new role, Neoh will oversee Roblox’s business strategy across Southeast Asia and Oceania, working with local teams and partners to align the company’s global priorities with regional market needs.

A key part of his responsibilities will be supporting Roblox developers and creators. This includes helping local studios make better use of the platform’s development tools, grow their communities, and find commercial opportunities.

Roblox also plans to strengthen awareness of its platform among players and parents in the region. Safety will remain a major consideration as the company works with parents, regulators, and local communities.

Neoh said his experience building businesses across the region has given him a close view of Southeast Asia’s creativity and entrepreneurial potential.

He added that Roblox can help a new generation of creators move beyond consuming digital content and start building their own experiences, communities, and businesses.

The bigger picture: Roblox’s regional expansion comes as gaming platforms increasingly serve as spaces for both entertainment and user-generated content. Its business model relies heavily on developers and creators who build experiences for players, making local creator support an important part of its growth strategy.

For Southeast Asia and Oceania, the opportunity extends beyond attracting more players. Roblox is also looking to build stronger relationships with local studios, developers, and business partners while addressing concerns around online safety.

Between the lines: Neoh brings two decades of experience founding, managing, and investing in technology companies across Asia Pacific. His background spans digital media, e-commerce, fintech, consumer health, and artificial intelligence.

He founded Malaysian e-commerce company GroupsMore, which merged with Groupon ahead of its IPO. He later led Groupon Asia Pacific.

Neoh also founded Fave, a Southeast Asian fintech and consumer payments platform that grew to more than 10 million users before being acquired by Pine Labs in 2021. Most recently, he served as Managing Director at Prenetics, where he led its consumer health businesses.

Beyond his executive roles, Neoh has invested in more than 50 startups across Asia, particularly in consumer technology. He is also a Founding Partner of First Move, an early-stage venture capital platform supporting entrepreneurs across Southeast Asia, and was recently involved in the launch of IM8.

Roblox Vice President of International Zhen Fang said Neoh’s experience building businesses and connections within the regional technology ecosystem would help guide the company’s next phase of growth.

For Filipinos: Roblox’s regional strategy could create more opportunities for Filipino developers and studios to build experiences for an international audience. Greater support for local creators may also help them explore ways to grow their projects into sustainable businesses.

However, the company has not announced specific Philippine programs or investments tied to Neoh’s appointment.

What’s next: Neoh will lead Roblox’s efforts to expand its presence across Southeast Asia and Oceania, with a focus on partnerships, creator development, and regional market needs. The company also plans to continue investing in local teams and strengthening its engagement with parents and communities on safety.

The Bottom Line: Roblox has appointed Joel Neoh to lead its business strategy across Southeast Asia and Oceania. With experience building major technology and fintech businesses in the region, he will be tasked with growing the platform’s local partnerships and creator ecosystem while keeping safety central to its regional plans.
