vivo opens Android 17 Beta 3 for X300 Pro, iQOO 15 developers

vivo has announced the release of Android 17 Beta 3 for two of its flagship smartphones, the vivo X300 Pro and iQOO 15, giving developers early access to Google’s next Android version on supported devices.

The beta release is aimed at helping app developers test compatibility, explore upcoming features, and optimize their apps before Android 17’s wider rollout. The software is now available through vivo’s developer platform for eligible devices.

Why it Matters: Early beta access gives developers time to adapt apps before a stable Android release arrives, reducing compatibility issues for end users once the update reaches consumer devices.

According to vivo, Android 17 Beta 3 focuses on three major areas: privacy and security, user experience, and performance efficiency.

On the privacy side, Android 17 introduces tighter network security by moving away from weaker traffic declarations. Background audio access is also being restricted further, requiring apps to either remain visible or use specific foreground permissions to continue audio playback.

Google is also adding stronger protections against OTP interception. Android 17 will delay SMS OTP reading for up to three hours in most apps, though apps using official SMS Retriever or User Consent APIs will not be affected. New permission controls are also being introduced to limit cross-app communication and background activity launches, helping reduce phishing and interface hijacking risks.

For usability, Android 17 improves large-screen device interactions by making touchpad pointer capture behave more like a mouse by default. This should make it easier for developers to adapt games and 3D applications across tablets, foldables, and ChromeOS devices.

Accessibility is also seeing updates, particularly for users typing in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese languages using physical keyboards, with improved voice and haptic feedback for screen readers.

Another addition is the new Android Contacts Picker, which allows users to share selected contact information with apps instead of granting access to the full contact list.

Performance improvements include a redesigned lock-free MessageQueue, better wake lock management, and support for allow-while-idle alarms aimed at reducing battery drain from recurring background tasks. Developers will also get expanded profiling tools to detect issues such as slow startup times or abnormal CPU activity.

The vivo X300 Pro beta is available in the Philippines alongside Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Nepal, Kenya, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Russia, Bhutan, and Tanzania.

Meanwhile, the iQOO 15 beta rollout covers Malaysia, Indonesia, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, and India.

With Android 17 development moving forward, how quickly do you think smartphone brands can deliver stable updates to users?
