HAYLOU Watch Hyper Review: GPS Without the Premium

Outdoor smartwatches have become more capable over the years, but many of the models with advanced GPS and offline navigation also come with premium price tags. The HAYLOU Watch Hyper aims to change that by bringing features such as dual-band GPS, offline maps, and over 170 sports modes to a more affordable segment. Here’s our full review.

Our review unit was paired with an Android smartphone and used for everyday notifications, exercise tracking, Bluetooth calling, and GPS navigation. We also evaluated the display outdoors and under direct sunlight, along with general comfort during daily wear.

Design and Construction

The HAYLOU Watch Hyper adopts a modern, rounded-square design that feels familiar without trying too hard to stand out. Its clean lines and minimalist appearance make it suitable for both casual wear and workouts.

A rotating crown on the side makes navigating the interface easier, especially when scrolling through menus or lists. Below it is another physical button that serves as a shortcut for launching workout modes, allowing quick access before heading out for a run or bike ride.

Despite its outdoor positioning, the watch remains surprisingly lightweight. The plastic construction helps reduce overall weight, making it comfortable enough to wear throughout the day without feeling bulky on the wrist. While it doesn’t deliver the premium feel of metal-bodied smartwatches, the build quality feels solid for its price range.

The included silicone sports strap is soft, flexible, and comfortable even during extended wear. It doesn’t trap too much heat and remained comfortable during workouts, making it suitable for users with active lifestyles.

Display and Audio

One of the highlights of the Watch Hyper is its 1.97-inch AMOLED display. The screen is bright enough to remain visible even under direct sunlight, making it easy to read notifications, workout statistics, and maps while outdoors.

Image quality is equally impressive. Text appears sharp, colors are vibrant without looking oversaturated, and the display offers excellent viewing angles with no noticeable color shifting when viewed from different directions.

Users can also configure how long the display stays awake after interaction. Through the settings menu, the screen timeout can be extended to as long as 30 seconds, providing enough time to view maps, notifications, or workout metrics without repeatedly waking the display.

You can also easily hear the instruction guide even outdoors with its built-in speaker, though you may have a harder time in noisier environments such as train stations or busy roads.

Performance

The HAYLOU Watch Hyper runs on HAYLOU’s proprietary operating system instead of Wear OS, which means there’s no app store or support for installing third-party applications. What you get out of the box is what you’ll be using throughout the life of the watch.

Fortunately, the built-in apps cover most of what users would expect from a smartwatch. Bluetooth calling works well for taking calls on the go, while the built-in voice assistant, weather app, calendar, and offline map support make the watch feel capable enough for daily use. Rather than trying to be a miniature smartphone, the Watch Hyper focuses on delivering practical features that complement your phone.

Navigation throughout the interface is smooth, with animations remaining responsive whether using the touchscreen or the rotating crown. During our testing, we didn’t encounter any noticeable slowdowns in everyday use.

One area where the software could be improved is notification management. Removing multiple notifications from a single application can occasionally introduce some lag, although it doesn’t affect the rest of the user experience.

Typography is another pleasant surprise. Menus, notifications, and fitness data are easy to read even on the relatively compact display, making information accessible at a glance.

Health and Fitness Tracking

The Watch Hyper supports over 170 sports modes, but its everyday health tracking is equally important for most users. Surprisingly, there are modes for mountaineering, marathons, and even ball games such as Pickleball which may delight many who

In our testing, the watch performed well for general activity tracking. Heart rate monitoring, step counting, and workout logging were consistent with other fitness trackers we have used, making it reliable enough for users who want to monitor their daily activity rather than gather professional-grade fitness data.

Workout recognition is straightforward, and starting an activity only takes a few taps once GPS is ready.

Connectivity

Pairing the Watch Hyper with a smartphone is straightforward, and synchronization remains stable throughout everyday use. Notifications arrive promptly, while Bluetooth calling works reliably within normal Bluetooth range.

The Haylou Fun companion app is also fairly dependable when maintaining a connection with the smartwatch. However, this persistence comes with a tradeoff.

Even when the watch is turned off, the app continues searching for the device in the background. While this ensures faster reconnection once the watch is powered back on, it can consume a noticeable amount of your smartphone’s battery over time. It’s a small annoyance that users should be aware of if they’re conscious about battery usage on their phone.

Then let’s talk about its Dual-band GPS. One of the Watch Hyper’s biggest strengths is its navigation system. GPS performance proved to be accurate during our testing, with location tracking remaining consistent throughout outdoor walks.

Before starting supported outdoor workouts, users need to wait until the watch establishes a connection with GNSS satellites. You’ll know it’s ready once the exercise’s “Go” button changes to green, indicating that location tracking has locked in. Note that you can use the watch alone and leave your phone, then sync it to the Haylou Fun app afterward. It’s also Strava compatible, though this requires connecting those two apps together.

Offline maps require a bit of initial setup through the Haylou Fun app. Users first need to download their preferred maps onto the smartphone before syncing them to the watch.

The first-time setup can be slightly confusing, as you’ll need to launch Offline Map mode while outdoors with your phone nearby to properly initialize the feature. After completing the initial setup, however, offline maps work as expected. Users can also download and sync multiple map regions, making the feature useful for those who frequently travel or explore different areas.

For a smartwatch at this price, having offline maps combined with dual-band GPS is a significant advantage.

Battery

Battery life is another area where the Watch Hyper performs well.

With the watch connected to our smartphone, receiving notifications, tracking daily activity, and serving primarily as a timepiece, it comfortably lasted around 15 days on a single charge. While this falls slightly short of HAYLOU’s advertised 18-day figure, it’s still an impressive result under realistic everyday usage.

Using GPS significantly increases power consumption, which is expected given the dual-band positioning hardware. During our testing, a five-minute outdoor walk consumed approximately 3% of the battery, meaning frequent GPS workouts will noticeably reduce overall endurance.

Charging is reasonably quick. From a completely depleted battery, the Watch Hyper reached a full charge in approximately 50 minutes using the included magnetic charger.

Who is it for?

Best For: Outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, cyclists, runners, travelers, and users looking for an affordable smartwatch with advanced GPS navigation.

Not Ideal For: Users looking for Wear OS, downloadable apps, mobile payments, or a smartwatch with an extensive app ecosystem.

The Bottomline: If your priority is an affordable smartwatch with dependable fitness tracking, accurate GPS, long battery life, and offline navigation instead of an extensive app ecosystem, the HAYLOU Watch Hyper is easy to recommend. It delivers meaningful outdoor features at a price that’s accessible to more users, making it one of the better value-oriented GPS smartwatches currently available in the Philippine market.

The HAYLOU Watch Hyper delivers dual-band GPS, offline maps, reliable fitness tracking, and long battery life in a lightweight smartwatch. Priced PHP 5,999 at Haylou’s official store on Shopee (BUY HERE), it offers outdoor-focused features that are typically found on more expensive wearables.
